Nagaraja Temple is also called as “Arulmigu Nagaraja Thirukkoil“. Nagaraja Temple is dedicated to serpent God Nagaraja. Snakes have been worshiped by Hindus, Jains and Buddhist for many years. This temple is located in Nagercoil town, the name Nagercoil came from Nagaraja (Five Headed Snake) temple. “Nagam” means, snake in Tamil. Nagercoil and around the areas are famous for greenery which attracts everyone at Kanyakumari District.
It is believed that there are lot of snakes around this temple area are protecting the temple. There is flower garden in this temple, the Nagalinga flower is famous here which represents God Nagaraja. There are two deities in this temple are Krishna (Ananda Krishna) and Nagaraja. Around God Nagaraja deity, the place will be always wet and sand taken from here consider as main prasadam. Color of the sand will be black for six months and white for other six months. Devotees get prasadam as this sand, Sandle, and few flowers in a piece of banana leaf. Devotees offer milk, turmeric powder and salt to Nagaraja Idols. Nagaraja Temple has vast pond in-front of main entrance, and devotees wash their hands and legs before entering into temple.
Lord Shiva is there in Nagaraja Temple in the form of Lord Vaayu and Lord Thirumal in the form of happiness. This temple is found as the mixed culture of Saivam, Vaishnavam, Buddhism and Jainism. One of the specialties of this temple is the roof of the temple has been covered by thatch.
