Kovil Sthala Puranam/ Temple Thala Puranam:
Kanyakumari Bhagavathi Amman Temple is the beautiful and one of the most powerful temple. There was a powerful king Bana an asura by birth was the ruler. He performed penance and got a boon from Lord Brahma that his death will happen only with the hand of an adolescent virgin girl. He was wreaked havoc everywhere and fearless to anything. Bhagavathy was unbiased Prakrit and she does not favor or bias to anyone. To keep the nature in balance, Bhagavathy manifested herself as Southern tip of the Aryavartha to kill king Bana.
Kumari Bhagavathy had immense devotion to Lord Shiva and she wanted to marry Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva also decided to marry her and all the marriage arrangements were made at Kumari Munai. Lord Shiva started from Shuchindram Temple for his marriage. Sage Naradha interrupted their marriage, because he realized that Bhagavathy is the only virgin girl can kill the king Bana. The marriage muhurtam (good time) time was planned in the early morning at Kanyakumari. Suddenly Naradha Munivar had sent wrong information that muhurtam time has passes as sun had already risen. The planned marriage arrangements and procession were returned. Devi Bhagavathy was waiting for long time and then she realized that she has been snubbed. With this unexpected and unbearable pain, anger, grief and insult, she had destroyed everything in-front of her. Finally she took penance and had chosen to be a Sanyas forever. The king Bana did not know who she was and he tried to attract and approach her. Goddess Bhagavathy as a Bhadrakali, killed Bana. The moment before his death he realized that she is Devi Bhagavathy in-front of him.
