Gandhi Mandapam Kanyakumari:
Gandhi Mandapam Kanyakumari is the memorial to honor the beloved leader Mahathma Gandhi, father of the Nation. Gandhi Mandapam was constructed in 1956. Mahathma Gandhi is the world famous Indian leader, who fought for independence of India.
Mahathma Gandhi visited Kanyakumari in 1925 and 1937. This is the place where Mahathma Gandhi ashes kept for public before immersion into sec on 12-Feb-1948. In this place Mahathma Gandhi Mandapam was constructed with special architectural design, such a way that, sun light will falls through the place where exactly the ashes had rested inside, through the hole from the roof, on the day of Mahathma Gandhi’s birthday 2nd October every year. Even-though lot of Gandhi Mandapam across India to honor Mahatma Gandhi’s life, Kanyakumari is the only place where sun light comes through inside. Mahathma Gandhi Memorial Mandapam is located near Kanyakumari Bhagavathi Amman Temple, near sea shore at Kanyakumari, 22 KM away from Nagercoil town.
About Mahatma Gandhi:
Mahatma Gandhi was one of the most popular leader fight for freedom India in British ruled India. His actual name was Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, he was born on 2nd Oct 1869 in Porbandal town and died on 30th Jan 1948. Everyone called Mahatma Gandhi as Gandhiji also he called as Father of the Nation. His father name was Karamchand Gandhi, and mother name was Putlibai Gandhi. His wife name was Kasturibai Gandhi.
After his death in 1948, his remains were cremated then sent to different parts of India to honor grieving events. One of the selected places was Kanyakumari, where small portion his ashes kept for public viewing before immersion into sec on 12-Feb-1948. After that memorial mandapam was constructed in this place where his ashes rested.
